Hey Amy, love your comments. I wanted to also say it's funny you mention Iago. Before I took over for the teacher going on maternity leave, my students had just wrapped up reading "Othello," And so playing off of that fact (and the obvious similarity and difference between him and Strangeworth), I had them create a Venn diagram comparing aspects of the two stories. It's true, too, at least we know what we're getting with characters like Iago, for all of their awful qualities.

Wow...very nice posting. I've read this story in the past, and may look for it again. I like your comment, " in the end they ought to be allowed to become whoever it is they are, free of the real fear that you’re judging them, either outwardly or inwardly. " As a parent and a child (duh!), I can see that beyond the family, our society is judging all the time. ALL the time. And we are constantly trying to perceive how we present ourselves, constantly seeking some weird sort of approval (even from ourselves!!!). And that space between, the technical "omission" of who we really are (hidden for various reasons) causes much of the evil that hits us on an everyday basis. We can't be honest with ourselves, we can't be honest with others, and someone in the meantime is hurt for that lack.
In my own experiences with evil, the worst was done by those who were so caught up in preserving their own reputation that they ignored reality. Because reality might smudge their garments.
That's why I like the character of Iago in Othello so much. At least he's honest with his deception.
